It’s difficult to be a solo bassist: Victor Wooten, Jay Leonhart, Adam Ben Ezra, Brian Bromberg, David Friesen have all risen to the challenge. There are more, but the point is, the bass isn’t usually thought of as a solo instrument.
I’ve never risen to the level of playing extended solos. When I play bass, it’s always been as part of a group. Frequently quartets, sometimes duets. Recently nothing other than practice sessions. But just practicing isn’t enough. Musicians need to perform in front of a crowd. It’s motivational and informative.
So I’m delighted to let you know about an upcoming performance with the Hutch Quartet! David Hutchinson put this together about a year and a half ago and after a bit of work, we’re ready to step out.
Friday, November 13th at 7pm at the Ross Island Grocery Cafe, 3502 S. Corbett Ave.
Sure would be fun to see you there!
Mark
